This was inspired by my walks in the dunes of Crane Beach. There is a small tree all alone at the top of a dune. It has wonderful roots that look like legs in the midst of pulling themselves out of the sand, ready to take a step. I sketched it many times. The opening in the dunes is inspired by the boardwalks at Plum Island where you walk for a short distance through the dunes to reach the ocean. Usually you can't see the ocean until that last step.

The drawing for this painting will be posted on the site eventually. It was after sketching many versions that I came too this one in a burst of creativity.

As with most of my paintings, there are many layers beneath the surface.
